Summary
Calcium is a silvery-white metallic element which is the most abundant mineral in the body. It is needed to form bones and is the main mineral involved in keeping bones and teeth hard.
Calcium is used to maintain nerve and muscle function and needed for the transmission of signals to nerve cells and muscle contraction.
It regulates heart rhythm and is also important for normal kidney function and for reducing blood cholesterol. After age 30 the body is less able to make bone, and calcium levels may significantly reduce putting people at risk of Osteoporosis.
